What is Laylatul Qadr?

Laylatul Qadr, known as the ‘Night of Decree’ or ‘Night of Power’ or ‘mother of all nights’, is one of the most sacred nights in the Islamic year. It takes place in the last ten nights of Ramadan (odd nights in particular) and is the night in which the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

It is also believed to be the night in which Allah’s mercy is on its peak to His creation and the night in which one’s fate is decreed and all matters are decided. As per Quranic Ayah, this night is better than 1000 months.

It is stated in Quran,

“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months,” (Qur’an, 97:3).

The Prophet (PBUH) said,

“Whoever prays on Laylatul Qadr out of faith and sincerity, shall have all their past sins forgiven,” (Hadith, Bukhari, and Muslim).

These Ayah and Hadith above are enough to tell about the importance of Laylatul Qadr.

When is Laylatul Qadr?

The exact date of Laylatul Qadr is not revealed, although it is believed to occur on an odd night in the last ten days of Ramadan (e.g. the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27 or 29th night). The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Seek it in the last ten days, on the odd nights,” (Hadith, Bukhari, and Muslim). Scholars say that concept behind not revealing the exact date of Layltul Qadr is that  Muslims try to find it in all odd nights id last 10 days of Ramadan and get more and more blessings out of each night till they find Lylatul Qadr.

What happens on the night of Layla Tul qadr: What Is Its Significance?

A Complete Surah of the Quran is revealed to tell us about the Significance of Lylatul Qadr and what happens in it. That Surah is Surah Qadr. In Which Allah (SWT) says:

Translations

Indeed, ˹it is˺ We ˹Who˺ sent this ˹Quran˺ down on the Night of Glory. And what will make you realize what the Night of Glory is? The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months. That night the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirits descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every ˹decreed˺ matter. It is all peace until the break of dawn.

Now tink, How precious is this night? When Allah himself is saying that ‘what will make you realize what the Night of Glory is?’So, How can we imagine the amount of mercy and blessings Allah SWT showers in this single night, on His creations?

This Surah is also telling us that it is the night in which all the matters of next year are decreed. ‘That night the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirits descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every ˹decreed˺ matter’. That means, this is the best chance to ask Allah SWT to forgive us and give us success in all matters of this world and hereafter.

How to Pray in Laylatul Qadr?

Now, as we know the significance of Laylatul Qadr, the next question I How to find it?

The answer is obviously, by PRAYING, prying more and more. So, now the question comes, How and What to Pray in Laylatul Qadr.

I’tikaf

The best Ibadah to make sure that you seek Laylatul Qadr and find it Insha Allah’ is to perform I’tikaf. Many Muslims around the world choose to spend the last 10 days of Ramadan in seclusion (i’tikaf), where one solely focuses on worshipping Allah and avoids involvement in worldly affairs. It is the best time to reflect, increase Ibadah, and recite Holy Quran with deep understanding, and get closer to Allah.

The sunnah is to perform i’tikaf for ten days but as a minimum, it can be one day and one night. I’tikaf is a great opportunity to refresh your connection with Allah. If you intend to perform i’tikaf this Ramadan, try to carry out those characteristics in yourself which can be carried on throughout the whole year.

During i’tikaf, focus on offering Nawafil, reciting the Quran and pondering upon it, reading authentic Hadith Books and making LOTS of Duas. Ask for forgiveness of your sins as much as you can make a pure intention to not repeat your past sins in the future.

There is another Laylatul Qadr dua that you should keep asking in the last ten nights whether or not to perform i’tikaf.

Narrated by Hazrat Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her)

When She (may Allah be well pleased with her) asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) “O Messenger of Allah if it is Laylatul Qadr, then what should I supplicate with?” he replied with the famous dua: “Allahumma, innaka Afuwwun Kareemun, tuḥibbu al-afwa fa‘afu anna”

Translation

“O Allah, indeed You are forgiving and Generous; You love to forgive, so forgive us.”

So, all my brothers and sisters in Islam, knowing all these virtues and significance of Laylatul Qadr, let’s make a resolution to gather, that we all will try our best to seek and find Laylatul Qadr Insha Allah because it worth investing these ten nights. May Allah bless us all with all the blessings of Ramadan and especially Laylatul Qadr.
